Chainsaw Man: A Surprising Twist on the Kill Monsters Genre
IMDB - 8.4/10
HMTR - 92/100
Episodes - 12
Chainsaw Man is an anime that made me feel ashamed because I dropped it after the first four episodes, dismissing it as another Jujutsu Kaisen copy. Despite hearing great things about the manga before the anime's release, the first four episodes didn't grip me as I had hoped. I should mention that I am not your typical anime or movie fan; while the initial episodes might be amazing for many, I am not easily swayed by gratuitous violence and monsters that seem to exist without reason.
Fortunately, for one reason or another, I decided to give this anime another chance. I told myself to enjoy it as a fun show with good animation and very interesting, unique characters. Boy, was I not prepared for episode 8. I have seen plot twists and shifts in tone, but I had never experienced anything like this. I don’t want to overhype it and risk you feeling underwhelmed, but I genuinely don’t think that’s possible.
Chainsaw Man is definitely a thriller, but its mystery should not be underestimated. As I mentioned before, I am not a big fan of monsters and fantasy. Being a mystery lover, I prefer stories set in worlds that make sense. Therefore, I consider it an achievement for a story to make me interested in a mystery that has nothing to do with the real world. Another story that managed this feat is Attack on Titan.
By the end of the series, you are left wanting more. The mystery was so compelling that I had to read the manga, which did not disappoint. I cannot recommend this series enough and eagerly await the rest of the manga to be adapted into either a movie or another series. The animation, sound design, and character design are all outstanding. The series can be a bit too violent or crude for some people, and I won’t deny that some of it might be unnecessary. However, I also cannot deny that some of the protagonist’s degenerate behavior leads to some awesomely badass moments. The main character is a breath of fresh air, but this show is definitely not for kids.
